LAPAN observed the Super-Blue-Blood Mood in various regions in Indonesia on Wednesday (31/1). This is a rare event because there are the occurrence of three phenomena at one time which are Super Moon (closest apogee of the moon to the earth), the Blue Moon (the second full moon occurs in one month), and the Blood Moon (lunar eclipse). This phenomenon was last observed 152 years ago.

The observations took place in Agam (Space and Atmospheric Observation Center/LAPAN Agam, LAPAN Bandung (Space Science Center), Space and Atmospheric Observation Center/LAPAN Sumedang, Center of Technology Testing and Observation of Space and Atmospheric Garut, Space and Atmospheric Observation Center/LAPAN Pasuruan, Space and Atmospheric Observation Center/LAPAN Pontianak, and Satellite Control Center, Observation of Space and Atmospheric, and Remote Sensing Biak (LAPAN Biak). Those observations were open for public and intended to educate public regarding the lunar eclipse.

LAPAN Agam performed an observation and data collection in Wirapraja Bukittinggi. LAPAN Agam provided two telescopes. One telescope was connected to a DSLR camera connected to a computer and projector so that people can watch through the screen. Meanwhile, another telescope was used for direct observation that could be used by the public.

The Space Science Center (LAPAN Bandung) opened the observation for public at 6pm to 11pm. Before starting the observation, Gunawan (LAPAN researcher) explained to participants about the lunar eclipse. He explained about the phases of the Moon. The participants also got an explanation of the synodistic period of the full moon before they directly watch the lunar eclipse on the roof of the building. The committee also played the live streaming of lunar eclipse in the Matahari room. Such observation was attended by 227 visitors.

LAPAN Sumedang set up two telescopes, one for observation by visitors and the other for shooting and video. LAPAN Sumedang also provided a screen for streaming video playback. In addition, animated video of eclipse was also played. Observations were followed by 453 visitors who came from kindergarten to college students. There were also people who came from outside Sumedang District.

In LAPAN Garut, the lunar eclipse observation was attended by 60 students and teachers from twelve High Schools around Garut. Prior to the observation, The Head of LAPAN Garut, Bambang Suhandi explained about LAPAN activities in realizing the vision to become the center of excellence of aeronautics and space science and technology. Later, LAPAN researchers, Rhorom Priyatikanto explained about the information of lunar eclipse. The information is related to the orbit of the Moon and the Earth.

The observations were made with refractor telescopes equipped with multi-color digital cameras and two telescopes for direct observation. The cloud covered the sky, especially on the eastern horizon. This inhibited the observer team led by Acep Nugraha to shoot the start of the eclipse that occurred at 18:48 pm. However, the conditions of Garut sky slowly improved and provided an opportunity for the team to shoot the Moon a few minutes before completely covered by the shadows of the Earth. In parallel with field observation activities, Chairman of Indonesian Ulema Council of Cikelet Sub-district, Aceng Muhidin led the eclipse prayer in rocket integration hangar.

Lunar eclipse observation at LAPAN Pasuruan was attended by 500 visitors from Pasuruan, Surabaya, Mojokerto, Sidoarjo, and Malang. LAPAN Pasuruan provided two telescopes that were placed in the yard of the office and the roof of the building. Such telescopes were connected to a widescreen monitor to make it easier for people to watch the lunar eclipse. Exactly at 18:48 pm, LAPAN Pasuruan obtained partial lunar eclipse images or early umbra. The peak of the eclipse occurred at 20:30 pm. The lunar eclipse ended at 22:11 pm. In addition to observing the total lunar eclipse, BPAA Pasuruan also held an eclipse prayer in the office yard led by the Head of the Ministry of Religious Affairs Pasuruan.

At LAPAN Pontianak, in addition to opening the lunar eclipse observations for the public, the Head of LAPAN Pontianak, Muzirwan, also explained about the process of solar and moon eclipses and knowledge of the planets. In Pontianak, the early phase of the lunar eclipse could be seen, but then closed by the clouds. Then, the lunar eclipse was clearly visible at 20:44. LAPAN Pontianak also organized an eclipse prayer.

LAPAN Biak invited 32 high school students and teachers in Biak Numfor District to watch the eclipse together. Before starting the observation, Head of LAPAN Biak, Dian Yudistira explained about the phenomenon of lunar eclipse. The students also got an explanation of the lunar eclipse and the way telescopes are used. Unfortunately, the eclipse could not be observed from LAPAN Biak because it was blocked by black clouds.
