LAPAN held a Remote Sensing Data Utilization Workshop to Support the Defence and Security Sectors, Jakarta (15/5). The Chairman of LAPAN, Prof. Dr. Thomas Djamaluddin said that remote sensing activities, especially in the provision of high-resolution satellite imagery is regulated in Presidential Instruction No. 6 of 2012 and reinforced by the Act Number 21 of 2013 on Space Conduct. Such legal bases mandate LAPAN to provide remote sensing satellite image data for national needs.
The data then can be utilized by all ministries, institutions, Indonesian Armed Forces, Indonesian Police, local government, and universities for free with government licenses. The high and very-high-resolution satellite images are not only used for land map making, agriculture, spatial planning, or disaster management, but also for defense and security purposes. LAPAN opens cooperation opportunities with various parties including from other countries abroad.
In the workshop, The Director of Remote Sensing Technology and Data Center, Dedi Irawadi, explained that LAPAN has been able to receive high resolution and very-high-resolution satellite imageries. The resolution is ranging from 1.5 meters, and also 50, 40, and 25 centimeters. The image was obtained through LAPAN remote sensing earth station in Parepare, South Sulawesi.
In addition, LAPAN has conducted an inventory of high-resolution satellite data from 2013 to 2016 covering an area of 1,397,824.201 square kilometers. Dedi continued, LAPAN's ability to receive satellite images of very high resolution and SAR can be utilized to support the defense and security sectors such as for the defense of land, sea, and air.
Dedi continued, remote sensing satellites circulate in orbit with a predetermined time. However, government agencies can coordinate with LAPAN if they require specific data.
In the workshop, the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) and the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) presented various results of utilization of high-resolution satellite images in their institutions. For example, satellite imagery can help in accelerating the discovery of marijuana fields in the territory of the Republic of Indonesia. "Satellite image produced by LAPAN is very helpful in carrying out our tasks," said National Narcotics Agency representative, Guno Wicaksono. Meanwhile, in the Indonesian Armed Force, the high-resolution satellite imagery is utilized for the renewal and revision of topographic maps, and also for the analysis of border issues.
The workshop was held by LAPAN in collaboration with Airbus. The purpose of such workshop is to expand the cooperation of both agencies in the utilization of high-resolution satellite imagery. LAPAN has been cooperating with Airbus since 1997. The cooperation is in the effort to improve the competence in the field of aeronautics and space science and technology.
